『ピラミッド』、『ＯＫ牧場の決斗』、『紅の翼』、『世界の楽園』を収録した本作は、ディミトリ・ティオムキン（『真昼の決闘』、『ナバロンの要塞』、『ジャイアント』、『アラモ』）が作曲した4本の映画の組曲を、偉大なエルマー・バーンスタインの指揮のもと、ロイヤル・フィルハーモニー管弦楽団、ソリスト、合唱団が演奏したパワフルなコンピレーション・アルバム。

1955年に公開された『ピラミッド』は、ハワード・ホークス監督、ウィリアム・フォークナー、ハリー・カーニッツ、ハロルド・ジャック・ブルームが脚本を担当し、ジャック・ホーキンス、ジョーン・コリンズ、デューイ・マーティン、アレクシス・ミノティス、ジェームズ・ロバートソン・ジャスティス、ルイゼッラ・ボニ、シドニー・チャップリン、ジェームズ・ヘイター、ケリマが出演した。『ピラミッド』は、金を手に入れることに執着し、そのすべてを来世へ持ち込もうと企むファラオ・クフ（ホーキンス）の物語である。彼は建築家のヴァシュタル（ジャスティス）に、盗難防止の墓を建設するよう依頼する。その見返りとして、クフは奴隷にされていたヴァシュタルの民を解放することにした。ネリファー王女（コリンズ）はファラオの二番目の妻となり、クフが財宝を連れて行くのを阻止しようと画策し始める……

1957年に公開された『ＯＫ牧場の決斗』は、ジョン・スタージェス（『荒野の七人』、『大脱走』）が監督を務め、レオン・ユーリスとジョージ・スカリンが脚本を担当し、バート・ランカスター、カーク・ダグラス、ロンダ・フレミング、ジョー・ヴァン・フリート、ジョン・アイルランド、ライル・ベットガー、フランク・フェイレン、アール・ホリマン、テッド・デ・コルシア、デニス・ホッパー、ウィット・ビッセル、ジョージ・マシューズ、ジョン・ハドソン、デフォレスト・ケリー、マーティン・ミルナー、 リー・ヴァン・クリーフ、ジョーン・カムデン、ケネス・トビーが出演している。『ＯＫ牧場の決斗』は、この古典的な物語を再構築した作品の中でも特に人気のある作品の一つであり、バート・ランカスターがワイアット・アープ役、カーク・ダグラスがドク・ホリデイ役を演じ、伝説的なスター誕生の演技を披露しているほか、優れたアンサンブルキャストがそれを支えている。

1954年に公開された『紅の翼』は、偉大なウィリアム・ウェルマン（『つばさ』、『ボージェスト』、『スター誕生』）が監督を務め、アーネスト・K・ガンが自身の小説を脚色し、ジョン・ウェイン、クレア・トレヴァー、ラレイン・デイ、ロバート・スタック、ジャン・スターリング、フィル・ハリス、ロバート・ニュートン、デヴィッド・ブライアン、ポール・ケリー、シドニー・ブラックマー、ジュリー・ビショップ、ペドロ・ゴンザレス・ゴンザレスが出演している。航空災害映画の草分けと見なされている『ザ・ハイ・アンド・ザ・マイティ』は、太平洋横断飛行中にエンジントラブルに見舞われた民間旅客機を描いた作品だ。パイロットが動揺する中、苦境に立たされた副操縦士が操縦を引き継ぎ、機体を無事に着陸させなければならない……。彼が不時着着陸の準備を進める中、乗客たちは自らの人生を再考せざるを得なくなる……。

1957年に公開された『世界の楽園』は、オットー・ラングが監督を務め、プロスパー・ブラネッリ、ジェームズ・S・パーカー、ローウェル・トーマスが脚本を執筆し、トーマス自身がナレーションを担当したドキュメンタリー映画である。『世界の楽園』は、初期の3スクリーン・シネラマ形式の旅行記映画の1つであり、世界中の古代都市、荒々しい水辺、山頂の緑豊かな庭園を巡り、楽園を探求する探検家としてのトーマスの姿を追った作品である。

ディミトリ・ティオムキンは、ロシア系ユダヤ人の作曲家であり、アメリカに移住してハリウッドで最も傑出しており、かつ最も愛された音楽家の一人となった。彼は、アメリカ映画史上最も成功し、多作な作曲家の殿堂において崇高な地位を確立し、4度のアカデミー賞受賞と16回のアカデミー賞ノミネートを果たした。ボルシェビキ革命前にサンクトペテルブルクでクラシックの教育を受けた後、ロシア革命を経てベルリンへ、さらにニューヨークへ移住した。1929年の株式市場の大暴落後、彼はハリウッドに移り住み、そこで『白昼の決闘』、『赤い河』、『真昼の決闘』、『果てしなき蒼空』、『北京の55日』、『ＯＫ牧場の決斗』、『リオ・ブラボー』、『ガンヒルの決斗』といった西部劇の音楽で最もよく知られるようになった。

1974年から1979年にかけて、過去の映画音楽の保存を強く信じる作曲家エルマー・バーンスタインは、ある高価な気まぐれにふけった。それは、アルフレッド・ニューマンやミクローシュ・ローザからアレックス・ノース、バーナード・ハーマンに至るまで、尊敬する同僚たちによる記憶に残るスコアの抜粋を再録音するというものだった。このコレクションは14枚のLPに及び、ハーマンの失われた『引き裂かれたカーテン』のスコア初録音をはじめ、多くの未発表映画音楽を収録していた。その後、2006年に「FILM SCORE MONTHLY」から、これらの歴史的な録音がCDとして限定版ボックスセットでリリースされたが、年月を経るにつれて入手困難な状態が続いている。

LAND OF THE PHAROAHS follows the Pharoah Khufu (Hawkins), who is obsessed with acquiring gold and he plans to take it all with him into the next life. He enlists the aid of Vashtar (Justice), an architect, to build him a robbery-proof tomb. In exchange, Khufu will release Vashtar's people, who have been enslaved. Princess Nellifer (Collins) becomes Pharoah's second wife and she begins to plot to prevent Khufu from taking his treasure with him...

Considered to be the granddaddy of air disaster films, THE HIGH AND THE MIGHTY follows a commercial airliner as it develops engine problems on a trans-Pacific flight. As the pilot loses his nerve, the troubled co-pilot must take over and bring the plane back safely... As he prepares for a crash landing, the passengers are forced to reasses their lives...

Released in 1957, SEARCH FOR PARADISE was a documentary film directed by Otto Lang, written by Prosper Buranelli, James S. Parker and Lowell Thomas, narrated by Thomas himself. SEARCH FOR PARADISE was one of the original three-panel Cinerama travelogue films, following Thomas as an explorer searching for paradise in the ancient cities, wild waters and lush gardens of the mountaintops around the world.

Dimitri Tiomkin was a Russian Jewish composer who emigrated to America and became one of the most distinguished and best-loved music writers in Hollywood. He won a hallowed place in the pantheon of the most successful and productive composers in American film history, earning himself four Oscars and sixteen Academy Awards nominations. Classically trained in Saint Petersburg before the Bolshevik Revolution, he moved to Berlin and then to New York City after the Russian Revolution. In 1929, after the stock market crash, he moved to Hollywood, where he became best known for his scores for Western films, including DUEL IN THE SUN, RED RIVER, HIGH NOON, THE BIG SKY, 55 DAYS AT PEKING, GUNFIGHT AT THE O.K. CORRAL, RIO BRAVO, and LAST TRAIN FROM GUN HILL.

From 1974 to 1979, composer Elmer Bernstein, a great believer in preserving the film music of the past, indulged an expensive whim: Re-recording excerpts from memorable scores by esteemed colleagues ranging from Alfred Newman and Miklos Rozsa to Alex North and Bernard Herrmann. This collection would span fourteen LPS and include many previously unreleased film scores, including the first recording of Herrmann's lost score to TORN CURTAIN. Later, these historic recordings were released on compact disc by Film Score Monthly in 2006 in a limited edition box set that has continued to become scarce over the years.

Citadel Records, a division of BSX Records, is proud to bring these recordings back into the marketplace, under license from the composer's estate with the music newly remastered by James Nelson at Digital Outland and retaining the original liner notes written by Christopher Palmer.
