Hammer Films are back and last year celebrated their 90th anniversary.
Eddie Izzard gives a riveting performance as a reclusive scientist and her murderous alter-ego in Joe Stephenson's gripping re-imagining of Robert Louis Stevenson's seminal horror story. Co-starring Scott Chambers and Lindsay Duncan, Doctor Jekyll channels the sinister paranoia of Hammer's classic psycho-thrillers while still remaining compelling, fresh and contemporary.
"The unique blend of tones in Doctor Jekyll demanded a great deal from its score - capturing the heart of Rob and Nina's tragedy, building suspense around Hyde's malevolent presence, adding levity to Nina's often comedic detachment from reality, and, of course, embracing the horror of Hyde's final act. Blair Mowat's masterful score balances all of these elements, weaving together the film's melodrama, classical pacing, and camp horror. Visually and audibly, we wanted to pay homage to Hammer Films' history, with the spirit of James Bernard's legacy echoing in this new return for Hammer Films. What Blair has achieved here is that rare original work that proudly displays its influences while feeling entirely fresh. How fitting that fans can now experience it as Hammer Films scores are best heard: on glorious vinyl, preserved on the shelves alongside other classic works of the genre."?-?Joe Stephenson?
Our director, Joe Stephenson, was looking for a bold, gothic, and dramatic score mixing traditional Hammer Films tropes with a modern sensibility. Much like Jekyll and Hyde, this is a score of two parts, recorded with two different orchestras - the Budapest Art Orchestra and The Royal Scottish National Orchestra. This helped to emphasise the split personality of the score: switching from sparse, haunting horror to the operatic gothic explosions we hear towards the end of the film. A 30-person choir helped achieve a sense of scale where needed, and Hyde's textural effects are performed on a variety of rare archaic instruments such as the Viola Da Gamba and Stroh Violin which help to evoke the sense of an ancient evil. With a gorgeous smoky coloured vinyl, and Sean Longmore's stunning bespoke artwork, this is a limited release that I'm eagerly awaiting to display on my own shelf. The future of Hammer Films is bright, and I'm thrilled that fans can celebrate its rebirth with a score that honours the past while eagerly stepping into a new era." -?Blair Mowat
