Quartet Records and MovieScore Media presents the CD release of the Belgian World War II adventure TORPEDO (known as U-235 internationally) with music by composer Hannes De Maeyer. Directed by Sven Huybrechts, the first Flemish submarine film ever is set during World War II and tells the story of a gang of Flemish rebels with a secret mission: they have to sail from Congo to the United States with a hijacked German U-boat carrying a cargo with which the Allies might win the war…
Composer Hannes De Maeyer had previously worked for A Team Productions on movies like Gangsta or Black. While the two movies directed by Adil El Arbi and Bilall Fallah dealt with contemporary subjects like the Belgian underworld and minority issues, Torpedo was something completely new for the producers. As Hannes explains: “Torpedo is really a love letter to the nostalgic adventure movies like The Great Escape or the Indiana Jones movies, so the music had to add to that atmosphere. Next to that, it was set in the WW2 era. I have always been a big fan of music from World War II related films and games such as Medal of Honor by Michael Giacchino and Christopher Lennertz, Saving Private Ryan by John Williams or Band of Brothers by Michael Kamen: all instant classics! In preparation for Torpedo, I completely immersed myself in that world.”
But being a fan of a musical world and actually producing it is two different things with some major obstacles that should be avoided. “As director Sven Huybrechts had been working on the idea for 10 years, the director was the one with a clear vision on what he wanted the music to be. The major difficulty was finding the balance between nostalgia without making it sound too old-fashioned. Torpedo also gave me the chance to do something I haven’t done before ? I composed this movie chronologically. Some exceptions here and there, but in general I’ve scored the movie from start till end. As a result, the themes develop naturally, I think.” ---レーベルより

ベルギーレジスタンスのリーダーであるスタンを演じるのは、“ベルギーの渡辺謙"と言われる実力派俳優、ケーン・デ・ボーウ。
熱血漢のリーダー、そして不器用ながらも娘を大切に思う父親という二面性を繊細に演じ分けている。
ドイツ人艦長のフランツを演じるのは、リドリー・スコット製作総指揮のSFドラマ「高い城の男」のスーリー・リーフェンスタイン。
ベルギー人であるスタンとは当初から衝突していたが、終盤ドイツ人の攻撃からスタンを救うという義理人情に厚く漢気のあるキャラクターを熱演。
スタンの娘・ナディーンを演じるのは、ベルギーを代表する人気若手女優エラ=ユン・ヘンハルド。

【あらすじ】
史上最高に危険な極秘ミッションが始まる。
第二次世界大戦時、ベルギーのレジスタンス集団がナチスの潜水艦を略奪した。
その目的は、原子爆弾の製造に必要なウランをベルギー領コンゴからニューヨークまで輸送するという極秘計画だった。
ナチスの原子爆弾開発に遅れを取っているアメリカは、世界有数のウラン鉱山が存在するコンゴから大量のウランを国内に運び込んでいた。
捕虜であるドイツ人キャプテンのフランツを指揮官とし、ナチスに妻子を殺されるという忌々しい過去を持つスタンをはじめとしたレジスタンス集団は、手探りの中このミッションを進めることになるが、ナチスの魚雷攻撃など予想以上の苦戦を強いられることになる。
果たして彼らは無事計画を遂行することができるのか?
