トラックリストローマがなぜ滅亡したのかをテーマに、アンソニー・マン監督の下、豪華キャストで描かれた大スペクタクル史劇。西暦１８０年。時の皇帝アウレリウスは、競技にふける道楽者の息子コモドウスを差し置き、信頼できる武将リヴィウスにその座を譲ろうと決めていたが、陰謀により暗殺されてしまう。そんな中、自分に資格はないと感じたリヴィウスは亡き皇帝の意に反し、自ら皇帝の座を辞退、その事により王座を得たコモドウスだが、やがて彼は暴政をふるいだす……。格調高く見事に再現されたローマの神殿、壮大な儀式の模様など、見どころ満載。かなりのスケールの大きさを感じさせてくれる秀作である。出演：ソフィア・ローレン、アレック・ギネス、スティーヴン・ボイド、ジェームズ・メイソン、他。1964年米。
