THE STORY: Tanit, Valeria and Shaila are three women from very different parts of the world who face the same problem: climate change. They will lose everything because of global warming effects and they will be forced to emigrate to survive.
THE SCORE: "Mariposas negras (Black Butterflies) and its creative process will remain in my memory forever. I will never forget when David Baute, director of the film, introduced me to the project for the first time. I was fascinated by the idea of telling, through my music, three realities as hard and deep as those of our protagonists. It is music of an intimate approach, with a deep emotional touch due to the transcendent message that the film sends to the audience. Except for me, playing the piano and keyboards, the rest of the main musicians of the musical production are women as a clear nod to the story. On the basis of a string quartet, the voice of our soloist Abora Cel in the main theme and many other ethnic voices from the African and Indian folklores, in this score I also worked with various characteristic instruments from the Caribbean, Africa and India. The piano, electronic programming and a powerful percussion section were essential in order to create of the most personal and intimate scores I have ever written. The music of Mariposas negras tells the story, feelings and inner drama of three trips, the ones of Tanit, Shaila and Valeria, three women who struggle to maintain their identity, not to disappear in the migratory feat due to the global warming that has taken away their roots and references. In the words of director David Baute: "Their main battle is not to lose their voices, to be able to tell their testimonies. They are blurred women who struggle not to be merge with the gray environment that rejects them. Our film not only tells their stories, but the chronicle of a dark chapter of our planet, plagued by an uncomfortable and urgent truth." - Diego Navarro
THE COMPOSER: Diego Navarro is one of the most renowned names in Spanish film music nowadays. His latest works have received several awards and nominations like his World Soundtrack Award nomination for Passage to Dawn, and a double nomination to the IFMCA awards, for Capture the Flag. His music for The Mauthausen Photographer was nominated for ‘Best Orchestral Score' at the XI Gaudi Awards and the II Spanish Audiovisual Music Awards. El cuco received the Best Music award at the 24th Fantastic Costa del Sol International Film Festival in 2023. As a conductor, Navarro is considered nowadays one of the most important batons in the universe of film music. He is also a main promoter of the genre as the director and founder of Fimucite, the worldwide known Tenerife International Film Music Festival. His scores for Dos, El cuco and SuperKlaus were released by MovieScore Media.
