UNA VITA VENDUTA (aka A SOLD LIFE) is a 1976 drama movie, directed by Aldo Florio, starring Enrico Maria Salerno, Gerardo Amato, Rodolfo Bianchi, Marino Cenna, Tony De Leo, Germano Longo, Imma Piro, Gabriele Tozzi, Daniele Dublino. The film is based on the eponymous short story by writer Leonardo Sciascia. Two members of the fascist legion GOD WANTS IT, Michele and Luigi, both from Sicily, met in Malaga and became friends in the course of the 1936-39 counter revolution. Fighting first in Guadalajara, where they had the taste of defeat, later they are led to conquest Madrid. Of different stands, the two were also driven by very different reasons to volunteer: Michele does not want to be any longer a caruso and to return to the sulfur mines. He wants to fight and put aside enough money to buy a little plot of land to cultivate, and no more hands kissing to none. Filed after three attempts of illegal expatriation, blabbering to be red (left wing), Luigi, in reality, only desires to find a way to go to America where his family lives. While in the course of the war Michele opens his eyes to the horrors of the fratricidal conflict and retrieves a minimum of conscience, Luigi passes from the cowardly collaboration to cynical opportunism. When Michele rebels to the command of an inhuman little hierarch, Luigi, to save his life, takes part to the firing squad, to execute a friend along with three surrendered reds. Ennio Morricone composed an orchestral OST dominated by a melancholy main theme for trumpet, alternated with suspence pieces of a military mood and often colored with Hispanic sounds. The recording of this CD (TT 41:34) comes from the master album (CAM SAG 9073) issued in 1976 and the stereo recording sessions, which are adding about twelve minutes of original never released music (approved in full by Ennio Morricone) to the selected material of the previous release (29:48), all properly restored and digitally remastered.
