In the second half of the 1960s, when Wojciech Kilar was one of the most sought-after film music composers in Poland, his numerous projects included three feature films which, although completely different in their message and form, were united by the crime-thriller nature of the stories they told. Kilar Kryminalnie brings these three soundtracks together on one album. The music surprises the listener with its unusual sound solutions: in Tylko umar?y odpowie (Only the Dead Will Answer), the saw and vibraphone reign supreme; in Zbrodniarz, ktory ukrad? zbrodni? (The Criminal Who Stole the Crime), ominous timpani and avant-garde strings take centre stage; and in Morderca zostawia ?lad (The Killer Leaves a Trace), a prepared piano is featured. The whole is surprisingly coherent in terms of the character of the compositions presented and the aura of anxiety that surrounds them.
The recordings are released in a remastered version from the original tapes from the archives of the Wroc?aw Feature Film Studio (Only the Dead Will Answer and The Murderer Leaves a Trace) and the Warsaw Documentary and Feature Film Studio (The Criminal Who Stole the Crime). The booklet includes text about the films and stills. The album continues the joint publishing series of the Feature Film Studio in Wroc?aw and GAD Records, presenting the most interesting film music recordings from the Studio's archives.
