トラックリスト第二次大戦後すぐ、ユダヤ人たちのイスラエル建国までの苦闘を描いた大作。やや情緒的に流れ過ぎているきらいはあるものの、母国建設を目指すユダヤ人を満載した巨大な貨物船の脱出行には、かなりの迫力がある。最も有名なのはアーネスト・ゴールドの作曲した主題歌で、今なお映画音楽のスタンダードとなっている。また、脚本を担当したＤ・トランボは後に「ジョニーは戦場へ行った」や「パピヨン」を描いた巨匠で、自らも赤狩りによってハリウッドを追われた経験を持つだけに、この作品でも“自由世界への憧れ”を強烈に描写している。長尺だが見所は多い作品といえる。監督：オットー・プレミンジャー、主演：ポール・ニューマン、エヴァ・マリー・セイント。1960年米。
