全世界で人気の同名ゲームシリーズを、マイケル・ファスベンダー主演で映画化。アサシン（暗殺者）として活躍した祖先の記憶を呼び覚まされた死刑囚の男が、歴史の裏に隠された多くの謎に挑む姿を描いたミステリーアクション。記憶を失った死刑囚カラム・リンチは、遺伝子操作により祖先の記憶を追体験させられることとなる。カラムの祖先はルネサンス期のスペインでテンプル騎士団に立ち向かうアサシン教団の伝説のアサシンで、禁じられた秘宝のありかを知る、歴史上最後の人物でもあった。現在と過去を行き来する中で、カラムは自身の遺伝子に秘められた、人類の歴史を変えるある秘密を知る。ファスベンダーが主人公カラムとその祖先を、謎の女性ソフィア・リキン役をマリオン・コティヤールがそれぞれ演じる。監督には「マクベス」でファスベンダーとコティヤールを起用したオーストラリア出身のジャスティン・カーゼル。音楽は弟のジェド・カーゼル。
