A director, a New Yorker, and today a universal filmmaker, Martin Scorsese will be one of autumn 2015’s stars with the dedicated Scorsese Exhibition at the French Cinematheque and also the Lumiere Prize awarded by the 7th Lumiere Festival. The Universal France Ecoutez le cinema! collection is proud to be associated with this major double event through the release of an exceptional 4CD box set, the first record-anthology devoted to the director. The Cinema of Martin Scorsese proposes the first chronological listening of the Scorsese soundtracks, from original compositions to rock classics, jazz standards, pop, baroque works and contemporary music. The set takes the form of a vast musical stroll on the scale of a lifetime, beginning with the incandescent score for Taxi Driver. Along the way, it creates some iconoclastic opposites ? U2 smiling at Georges Delerue while Ray Charles jostle Bernard Herrmann ? and this whole set is enriched and illustrated with pieces never available on record before (Bringing Out The Dead or again, the short-film Made in Milan), an exclusive interview with composer Howard Shore, and a suite for piano entitled The Marty Suite, specially put together and performed by composer Jean-Michel Bernard. With five hours of music, the present set is an invitation not only to watch Scorsese’s pictures but also to listen to them. “Very often,” confirms Scorsese, “it’s only by listening to the music chosen for the film I’m preparing that I can start to visualize it. Without that, I’d be lost.” The set tells a magnificent Scorsese story in a new way, using the original soundtracks of his life in the movies; it ties in perfectly with the major film event of autumn 2015.
