魔法使いガンダルフやトーリン・オーケンシールド率いる13人のドワーフとともに、かつてのドワーフの王国エレボールを取り戻すため冒険を続けるホビット族の青年ビルボ・バギンズは、姿を変えることができる獣人ビヨルンや、巨大な蜘蛛の群れにも遭遇しながらも、やがて目指す「はぐれ山」へとたどり着くが……。「ロード・オブ・ザ・リング」3部作にも登場した人気キャラクターで、オーランド・ブルーム演じるエルフのレゴラスも再登場。エルフ族の新キャラクター、タウリエル役には「LOST」のエバンジェリン・リリー。物語の鍵となる邪竜スマウグの声を、英人気俳優ベネディクト・カンバーバッチが担当する。
