学校に友達がおらず家族にも心を開けずにいるエヴァン・ハンセン（ベン・プラット）は、ある日、自分宛に書いた“Dear Evan Hansen（親愛なるエヴァン・ハンセンへ）”から始まる手紙を、同級生のコナーに持ち去られてしまう。後日、校長から呼び出されたエヴァンは、コナーが自ら命を絶ったことを知らされた。悲しみに暮れていたコナーの両親はエヴァンの手紙を見つけ、息子とエヴァンが親友だったと思い込んでしまう。これ以上コナーの両親を苦しめたくないと思ったエヴァンは、思わず話を合わせてしまい、“ありもしないコナーとの思い出”を語る。コナーの話は人々の心を打ち、SNSを通じて世界中に広がり、彼の人生は大きく動き出す。

主人公が1通の手紙と“思いやりの嘘”をきっかけに、人とのつながりや本当の自分に気づくまでの過程を描いたミュージカルを映画化した本作。監督を務めたのは、『ワンダー 君は太陽』や『ウォールフラワー』のスティーヴン・チョボスキー、製作には『ラ・ラ・ランド』『グレイテスト・ショーマン』のスタッフ陣が集結した。
