The sublime director Yoji Yamada’s The Yellow Handkerchief (1977), adapted from a series of 1971 columns written by American journalist Pete Hamill, tells the tale of a road trip spontaneously undertaken by a trio whose back stories are revealed through subtly nuanced flashbacks. The film was the first to receive the Best Picture award of the Japan Academy Prize.
