“This is the most visually accomplished film since Barry Lyndon… There’s not a false moment in it, not a moment when we feel the meaning of Guthrie’s life has been compromised for movie reasons. David Carradine’s performance as Guthrie finds just the right balance between his pride and innate simplicity.” - Roger Ebert, Chicago Sun-Times
“Carradine’s studious underplaying is impressive, and Haskell Wexler’s Oscar-winning photography evokes a lyrical sense of atmosphere and location.” - Time Out London
Director Hal Ashby’s meticulously detailed bio-pic of the politically engaged singer-songwriter Woody Guthrie (a superb David Carradine) recreates the American Great Depression while also giving us a portrait of a flawed genius utterly in tune with his difficult times. Stunningly shot by the great cinematographer Haskell Wexler, and also featuring wonderful performances from Melinda Dillon, Ronny Cox, and Gail Strickland.
