“Joy Adamson’s best-selling book Born Free has been entrusted to honest, intelligent filmmakers…this film casts an enchantment that is just about irresistible…a poignant but happy reminder of the beauty and mystery of the life cycle.” - Vincent Canby, New York Times
“A sterling case of the family-animal film upgraded to quality status, Born Free is a fine entertainment that approaches its subject with maturity and grace. A must-see when it came out, the story of the lioness Elsa and her human parents may not teach us everything there is to know about lions, but it doesn’t insult our intelligence either.” - Glenn Erickson, DVD Talk
Born Free (1966), a meticulous adaptation of Joy Adamson’s best-selling book, tells the story of a Kenyan game-keeper (Bill Travers) and his animal-loving wife (Virginia McKenna) who adopt a lion cub, Elsa, raising her and eventually giving her up to the wild life she deserves. Told in semi-documentary style, the film features an Academy AwardR-winning score by the great John Barry, available on this Twilight Time release as an isolated track.
