“A film noir shot in dazzling color, a Hitchcock movie with the soul of a Jean Renoir drama. The latter is this movie’s dedicatee, and his humane vision of the animal that is man is very much in evidence.” - Ty Burr, The Boston Globe
“So full of lovely, complex things?of unannounced emotions, of ideas, of the memories of other movies…that it defies easy definition and blithely triumphs…It is the creation of a superior moviemaker who works eccentrically in the classical tradition.” - Vincent Canby, The New York Times
“A cool combo of film noir, star vehicle, and picaresque romance. It’s vintage Truffaut, and a great way to get acquainted or reacquainted with one of cinema’s true masters.” - sfgate.com
Pantheon director Francois Truffaut’s adaptation of Cornell Woolrich’s Waltz into Darkness, Mississippi Mermaid (1969) stars the iconic Jean-Paul Belmondo as a wealthy plantation owner on Reunion Island who falls madly in love with his mail-order bride (the stunning Catherine Deneuve), despite the fact that she is not quite what she seems?and is, in fact, a lot worse. This tale of obsessive love features music by Antoine Duhamel, available on this Twilight Time release as an isolated track.
