Fresh off another collaboration with writer/director Billy Wilder, 1959's Some Like It Hot, Adolph Deutsch provided the score for the acclaimed romantic comedy The Apartment, released in theaters the following year. Most treasured for its preexisting orchestral-piano theme song by British composer Charles Williams -- originally called ''Jealous Lover'' but retitled ''Theme from The Apartment'' for the movie -- the soundtrack also features era-classic, jazz-influenced instrumental contributions from Deutsch. His sultry piano/strings/saxophone piece ''Lonely Room'' and the Chinese restaurant's ''Hong Kong Blues'' are among the tracks that perfectly suit the at once wistful and playful screenplay and performances. Other preexisting songs such as ''Blue Christmas,'' ''Little Brown Jug,'' and ''Tavern in Town'' were worked into the soundtrack, the latter two functioning as background for party scenes. Notable trivia: legendary film composer John Williams orchestrated and played piano for segments of the soundtrack. Marcy Donelson
