Who Gets The House (1999) is a Canadian Film about the heartbreak caused by divorce and the impact on the children. Alan Williams has crafted a wonderfully gentle and sympathetic score that demonstrates his mastery of lyrical and emotional scoring with a turn of style reminiscent of James Horner's score for Sneakers.
The CD opens with a romantic upbeat jazz vocal, 'Evermore', performed by Patrick Tuzzolino and also written by the composer. The 'Main Theme' is a buoyant busy, fast moving cue, which introduces the flute driven theme that becomes more prominent later in the score. This is followed by the 'Love Theme', a slow romantic piano cue again backed by a plaintive flute. The variety of moods portrayed in the score is immense, from the circus-like manic 'Couch Counciling' to the impish 'Little Genius' and on to the poignant 'Mom Breaks Down' to the tender 'End Credits'.
Alan Williams' score for Who Gets The House is similar to a pair of old shoes, comfortable and familiar and something that is very pleasing to return to after stiff and forced scores. His flowing style is always a joy to listen to and like his previous scores to Island of the Sharks and Tiny Heroes can improve any mood. Sadly this is a promotional release, which may be a little difficult to find, but well worth the effort. (Music from the Movies by Andrew Keech)
