Tamaru, a 21-year-old Japanese soldier and aspiring manga artist, is recognized for his talent and assigned a special duty: the "Merit Officer," tasked with recording the final heroic deeds of his comrades for their families. Over 40,000 elite American troops attack. The Japanese forces numbered just 10,000. Battles erupted one after another on the beautiful tropical island, amid hunger, thirst, and disease. Young soldiers, thinking of their families and hometowns, fell one after another. In this hellish battlefield?a war of attrition where even suicide was forbidden, where only 34 out of 10,000 survived to the end?what did these young men think and how did they live?

Hitoshi Itagaki stars as protagonist Hitoshi Tamaru, while Tomoya Nakamura plays his reliable comrade, Keisuke Yoshiki. These two actors, whose solid performances keep them in demand for notable productions, passionately portray young soldiers struggling to survive the brutal battlefield.

Composing the music is Kenji Kawai, known for anime works like "Mobile Police Patlabor" and "Ghost in the Shell," and currently working on the popular NHK series "Unsolved Cases." His weighty, serious compositions and nostalgic melodies express the passionate determination of young soldiers striving desperately to survive in a harsh and cruel world.
