Sigr!dur N!elsd¢ttir is a 78 year old grandmother, living in the country outside the small town of Reykjavik. About once a month she records a cd's worth of lo-fi keyboard gems at her home, draws a few covers, burns around 30 copies and takes them to the one indie record store in the town. They sell out instantly. Add that up over the past 3 years and the lady has made more albums than the Rolling Stones. This is the real stuff of the Icelandic music scene, which nobody has done more for in the last 5 years than the Kitchen Motors label - a collective think tank organizing multi-media events and recording collaborations throughout Iceland and Europe. They organized some of the first Sigur R¢s concerts, introduced m£m to their drummer, and consistently cultivate and motivate new creative talents that they find under hidden, magical rocks. And what a family it is. This album sees the debut solo-release from Jonsi Birgisson, singer of Sigur R¢s, under the name Frakkur, as well as the debut solo-release from m£m founder Gunnar Tynes, under the name Illi Vill. Add to that the forementioned N!elsd¢ttir, Mugison, Auxpan, Slowblow, Amina (the Sigur R¢s string section), Hilmar Jensson & Sk£li Sverrisson (two of the most respected musicians in the country from the Sugarcubes era, now professors at the music school there and regularly touring with Jim Black)... It's a phenominal list, but most importantly it is a list of friends who have known each other all their lives, intensely creative people all working toward the same goal. Release Date: 2006.6.16
