Mutant, in partnership with Sony Music Masterworks, and Amazon MGM studios are proud to present the complete soundtrack to Lord & Miller's epic masterpiece Project Hail Mary.
Track ListReuniting with his longtime collaborators Phil Lord and Christopher Miller, following their award-winning Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse franchise, Pemberton developed a sonic identity for the film rooted in human fragility and hopeful optimism. The result is a score that is as emotionally resonant as it is sonically adventurous, relying on a deeply organic and human-centered sound to capture the film's central message of enduring hope.
This limited edition collectable box set features
* Daniel Pemberton's expanded original score - featuring approx 15 minutes of material not available in any other format. Including 2x Bonus Tracks not available on the Vinyl release
* The film's original soundtrack album, including needle-drops from the film
* 24 page booklet featuring liner notes by Composer Daniel Pemberton
* Exclusive Project Hail Mary 3-inch patch
* Note: Artwork depicted on product page is digital mock-up. Final product may vary slightly in person.
In approaching the score to Project Hail Mary, composer Daniel Pemberton was challenged with balancing the film's massive scale with the intimacy of its two-character narrative. An initial starting point for Pemberton was at the guidance of filmmakers Phil Lord and Christopher Miller, who used the phrase "Hope Core" to describe the film. Crafting music that contained both scale and wonder, but also vulnerability and fragility, Pemberton gravitated toward an organic, human-centered sound, using materials like wood, metal and steel drums alongside vocals and percussive stomping and clapping to keep the score tactile and imperfectly human.
One of the score's defining elements is a sample of a squeaky water tap, which Pemberton recorded and transformed into a fragile, slightly unstable instrument. The sound mirrors the emotional starting point of the film, gradually expanding as the main character moves from isolation toward connection. As the story unfolds, Pemberton layers in manipulated human voices, off-kilter textures and heartbeat-like percussive elements to expand the score into a full tapestry of choir, orchestra and rhythm. The result is a musical journey that grows from a single, fragile tone into something vast and communal, capturing the film's core themes of communication, discovery, and the physical presence of humanity.
Of the score, composer DANIEL PEMBERTON says, "Project Hail Mary was a soundtrack journey like no other. Right from the beginning, we all talked about trying to make a score that subconsciously connected you to being a human and the world around you - whether through trying to use sound that felt unusually elemental - wood (woodblocks), metal (steel drums), glass (cristal bachet), water (leaking taps!) or through the sounds a human could make - from large choirs to mouth drum machines, delicate and electronically treated solo voices to noisy hand clap stomp ensembles using their entire bodies to deliver percussive scale. I wanted to create an organic and unusual sound world that hopefully felt new and unexpected yet still reached and touched the emotional beats that we long for in great film making experiences, that could envelop you in the awe and wonder of the universe yet still deliver the fun and thrill of discovering a brand new friendship, even if it does happen to be with a rock from another planet. It was a crazy journey that I am very proud of that called out for an approach I'd never embarked on before. Fingers crossed this musical Hail Mary worked…!"
