Aka DEATH RIDES A HORSE (1967) is a movie that belongs to the genre of the so called spaghetti western, directed by Giulio Petroni, starring John Philip Law and Lee van Cleef in the leading roles. The plot: the family of Bill Meceita (Law) is massacred and once mature, the man goes in search of the killers. Along the way he meets Ryan (Van Cleef) and the two men very soon become friends. They remain friends until all but one of his family assassins are gunned down by Meceita. But he last one appears to be Ryan. The scenario of Giulio Petroni and Luciano Vincenzoni looks very American, infact in the American westerns of Ford and Hawks friendship is the highest good, a value that dominates in this weird western for Italian standards. And this is exactly the reason for which this movie one of the best productions in the genre. The music score has been composed, orchestrated and conducted by Ennio Morricone and it adds a remarkable value to the movie. There are no strings in the whole score and for the maestro it is an unusual approach, yet very original. Guitars, flute, piano, timpani, drums, other percussion and the vocals dominate the soundtrack. The soloists are not mentioned, but they did a fantastic job. I Cantori Moderni di Alessandroni perform in their own unique way with Alessandro Alessandroni on evidence with his original whistling. The song `Death Rides a Horse` in tracks 20 and 26 was written by Maurizio Attanasio (stage name: Maurizio Graf) and performed by Raoul (who' s real name is Ettore Lo Vecchio). There are a certain number of tracks composed for the film that return in various orchestrations on this cd. The score is a little masterpiece and a must have, no strings attached.

GENTE DI RISPETTO
Aka THE FLOWER IN HIS MOUTH (1975) directed by Luigi Zampa. Starring Franco Nero, Jennifer O’Neill and James Mason in the leading roles. A young female teacher (O’Neill) is on her arrival in a Sicilian village invaded by a tough guy who is found murdered the next day, as others who oppose her later on. She seeks support from some civilized notables who are like her committed to social improvements. But the benefit only seems to be for the landlords. Not a bad film but it is not a lost treasure either. Luigi Zampa, who has directed 38 movies, used the collaboration of Ennio Morricone only on two of these: GENTE DI RISPETTO (1975) and IL MOSTRO (1977). The score has a Sicilian flavor as you can hear already in the first trackc Mandolini e chitarre, a pleasant tarantella for two instruments. The mandolin was played by Alessandro Alessandroni in the tracks 1,3,5,6,7,9,11,15. It was maybe by the request of the director (it happened before), but the tracks Gente Ipocrita, Appendice 1 and Passeggiata a Rischio, sound a little like the main theme from INVESTIGATION OF A CITIZEN ABOVE SUSPICION (INDAGINE SU UN CITTADINO AL DI SOPRA DI OGNI SOSPETTO) (Elio Petri, 1969). Of course with different arrangements, but the basic line is the same. For the tracks: Solo per amore (2,8,16) Morricone wrote a wonderful the flute theme played by Marianne Gazzani Eckstein. The maestro has composed, orchestrated and conducted the score and all tracks are melodious and interesting. Some are repeated, and that is OK when good music is involved as in this case.
