Director Akira Kurosawa, 45, and composer Fumio Hayasaka, 40.
The legendary duo spoke immediately after the completion of the "RECORD OF A LIVING BEING" script,
Miraculously discovered voice recordings of the legendary duo talking about the film industry, filmmakers, cultural theory, and antiques, etc., shortly after the completion of the screenplay for "RECORD OF A LIVING BEING".
The world's first CD recording of this historic dialogue between a world-class director and a composer in whom Japan places absolute trust!
Fumio Hayasaka is a composer known for his film music for Akira Kurosawa's "Drunken Angel," "Stray Dog," "The Ugly," "Rashomon," "Hakuchi," "Ikiru," "Seven Samurai," "Record of A Living Being," and many other pure music works.
In February 1955, Hayasaka purchased a tape recorder, which was still rare at the time, and whenever he had a visitor, he would record their conversations and later enjoy listening to them. These recordings are extremely valuable documents of Hayasaka's later years, as he unexpectedly died suddenly of emphysema (sudden pneumothorax) on October 15 of the same year.
In the 1970s and 1980s, music critic Kuniharu Akiyama frequently visited the Hayasaka home to check on and research Hayasaka's belongings, and offered to lend materials including this recording. Since then, the tapes have been kept at the Akiyama home. Mrs. Akiyama, Aki Takahashi, a pianist, has long supported the activities of "Salida," and this relationship led to the discovery of the tapes.
The tapes contain valuable records of an important person with strong ties to Fumio Hayasaka, who is well known and influential in the world. That person was Akira Kurosawa.
On May 1, 1955, Kurosawa, who had completed the screenplay for his new film "Record of Living Being," visited Hayasaka's home with the printed script in hand. And, to his surprise, he found a tape on which he had recorded the scene.
The conversation between Kurosawa and Hayasaka on the tape is not limited to the discussion of the new film, but also covers a wide range of topics such as each other's recent situation, trends in the film industry and filmmakers of the time, film theory, cultural theory, and their shared pleasure in antiques. They discuss historical matters that we would not be aware of today until we read the documents in real time.
Salida" has decided to release this recording on CD, believing that it is a valuable document rich in cultural insights and definitely deserves to be heard by a wide audience.
Ltd. and K&K Bros. which manage the rights of director Akira Kurosawa, permission for production from Genko Kitaura (Hayasaka), the bereaved family of composer Fumio Hayasaka, and production cooperation from Aki Takahashi, we have realized the world's first CD of this historical dialogue with composer Fumio Hayasaka, in whom world-famous director Akira Kurosawa placed his absolute trust. Akira Kurosawa, the world's most trusted composer. [Machine Translantion]
