A in-depth look into the works of Japanese film composer Toru Takemitsu, who is recognized as one of the most important and groundbreaking composers in the history of Japanese music, and has been honored around the world for his contributions to the music of Japanese cinema by organizations such as the Los Angeles Film Critics Association and the Flanders International Film Festival in Belgium. This program contains interviews with Takemitsu and many noted Japanese film directors, plus clips from many of the films that Takemitsu scored over his 40 year film career, including Woman in the Dunes, Empire of Passion, Black Rain, Under the Cherry Blossoms, and also from director Akira Kurosawa's Ran. Music For The Movies is an exciting documentary series chronicling the influence music has had on the making of movies. These four programs - Bernard Herrmann, Toru Takemitsu, Georges Delerue, and The Hollywood Sound - explore the complex relationship between image and music in cinema, taking audiences behind the scenes to bring the story of movie music to life.
