Il dio sotto la pelle is a compelling blend of mondo movie and nature documentary, released in 1974 and directed by Folco Quilici and Carlo Alberto Pinelli.
The narrative explores the lives of those who reject consumerist modernity in order to live in harmony with nature. Quilici and Pinelli capture selected communities, eco-villages, or alternative individuals across various continents, offering a critical and poetic perspective on new lifestyles.

The film initiates an ecological discourse, beginning with catastrophic data from scientific sources about the progressive extinction of essential resources that humanity will inevitably face in the coming decades?unless it changes course.

It then examines the increasingly widespread phenomenon of individuals, conscious of this crisis, seeking hypothetical salvation in places as far removed as possible from mainstream civilization?spaces that are, paradoxically, becoming increasingly confined and artificial.

Dennis and Silvia live with their son in the mountains of New Mexico, having turned their backs on both profession and income. Bill and Josephine have chosen Africa. A German man ended up in the Solomon Islands, another European in Polynesia. A mountaineer from Orvieto has spent the last twelve years secluded in a Zen monastery in Japan.

The music, composed by Piero Piccioni, features a refined mix of jazz, funk, exotica, lounge, and psychedelia.

The soundtrack accompanies the documentary with urban, natural, and psychedelic atmospheres, reflecting the tension between nature and counterculture.
