Director Feng Xiaogang's The Banquet, which premiered at the Venice Film Festival on September 3, has attracted the most attention among the Chinese films at the festival, as it features the strongest cast with Zhang Ziyi, Zhou Xun, Ge You, and Daniel Wu. Tan Dun, whose original score for Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon triumphed at Oscars in 2001, has created captivating music for the epic film The Banquet. However, quite the opposite of the Chinese classical style in his previous award-winning attempt, Tan Dun brilliantly interweaves Chinese cultural elements into Western classical style music. Famous Mongolian singer Teng Ko Erh, award-winning actress Zhou Xun, and 'Super Girl' singing contest 2nd runner-up Jane Zhang sing in different styles. Internationally famous pianist Lang Lang performs the accompaniment, enriching the soundtrack with his tender piano music.
'Song of Yue People', a recurring motif in the film, has two versions, both included in the soundtrack. Teng Ko Erh's mellow voice fills the song with such a strong melancholy that even the accompanists wept during recording. While Teng's version goes with a swordplay scene in the film, the other version in Zhou Xun's crystal clear voice fits perfectly with a scene showing her dancing. With classic Chinese lyrics, the song carries the poetic grace of Chinese tradition. The theme song 'I Reward Love with All I Have' by Jane Zhang, on the other hand, is the most accessible song in the album and should be very popular with the audience.
