The film success of 1957, The Bridge On The River Kwai was both a critical and box office success, picking up seven Academy Awards, including three of the most prestigious in Best Picture, Best Director and Best Actor. It also won the Academy Award for Best Music, which went to Malcolm Arnold, the only Oscar he would win despite scoring more than one hundred films. Yet The Bridge On The River Kwai is such a unique volume of work it was always going to prove impossible to better, so the award is entirely justifiable.
